A Letter from Fr. Charlie on Evangelization - PART THREE

October 19, 2014

In my two earlier letters this fall, I challenged all of us to respond to Pope Francis’s call to become “missionary disciples” and suggested some areas of discipleship and evangelization I see as key components for us.  These two letters are posted on the parish website: www.stfrancisholland.org

In my earlier letters, I also let you know that we would begin our discipleship effort with a New Life Retreat November 21-23; please plan to attend.

My earlier letters (posted on the parish website: stfrancisholland.org) briefly introduced the idea of “evangelization” and “stewardship.”  This week I want to dig deeper.
Evangelization.   What does this mean for St. Francis de Sales Parish?

    Dear Parishioners,

Evangelization is the primary mission of the Church.  This mission is given to all of us as baptized in the Lord Jesus.  This is the mission that all of us are called to live, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15)

In last Sunday’s gospel (Mt 21:33-43), we heard Jesus tell the parable of the landowner whose vineyard tenants treated him with profound disdain despite offering them great wealth. The tenants even killed the landowner’s son. Jesus used this parable to warn his audience—and us—that the Kingdom of God is given only to those who respond to God’s love with love.

    October is Respect Life Month

Loving God, I thank you for the gift of life you gave and continue to give to me and to all of us. Merciful God, I ask your pardon and forgiveness for my own failure and the failure of all people to respect and foster all forms of life in our universe.Gracious God, I pray that with your grace, I and all people will reverence, protect, and promote all life and that we will be especially sensitive to the life of the unborn, the abused, neglected, disabled, and the elderly.
