Today, March 11, 2020, we received word from Bishop Walkowiak regarding how we and other parishes in the Diocese of Grand Rapids should help limit the spread of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) now that there are two confirmed cases in Michigan. Below are the outlined guidelines our parish will be following. These measures are, at this point, out of an abundance of caution to limit the spread of the virus. We will update our webpage and other media sources with further information as needed.
A summary of temporary changes that take effect immediately:
- Your obligation to attend mass is (always) waived if you're feeling ill.
- Communion: we will not be distributing the Precious Blood of Christ (no chalice) at Masses.
- Exchanging the sign of peace: we ask that parishioners use means of non-physical contact. (perhaps bowing, nodding, spoken greeting, etc.).
- Lord’s Prayer: we ask that there is no hand-holding.
- Our Holy Water font will be empty until further notice.
The bishop would like us to remind everyone that your obligation to attend mass is waived if you are feeling unwell. With the seasonal flu and the Coronavirus in play right now, please take seriously the advice to stay home if you are unwell. If you are home, we encourage you to participate in one of our live broadcast weekend Masses (10:30 and 12:30) via online video through our parish website, Youtube Chanel or Facebook page live. We'll miss seeing you and worshiping in the same space together, but everyone will appreciate your caution.
Effective immediately, the bishop has directed us not to distribute the Precious Blood of Christ during Mass (the chalice). Remember that Christ is fully present in both species of the Eucharist, body and blood. We are working to address the concerns of those among us with celiac disease who receive from the cup only. If you have celiac disease, please see the Mass coordinator who will be in the hallway between the gathering space and the restrooms at the grandfather clock for instructions on receiving low gluten hosts. If you are a regular parishioner or frequent visitor, please send an email to pkonczyk@stfrancisholland.org, so we can keep you informed on changes to how to receive low gluten hosts as we go forward and find out what works best.
Since the likelihood of saliva contact with a Eucharistic ministers' hands increases when you receive Communion on the tongue, please give careful consideration to receiving in the hand for a while until the threat of disease passes if you're accustomed to receiving the Eucharist on the tongue. Ultimately, it's your decision, but please give this serious thought.
Holy Water fonts will be emptied; we encourage you to continue to stop for a moment at the font when you enter, recall your baptism, and sign yourself with the cross. On your way out, you can do the same recalling the mission given to us at our baptism to go live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Exchanging the sign of peace using something other than handshaking is being implemented. A suggestion is taking a cue from our Vietnamese community who traditionally use bowing as a greeting. Also, please refrain from hand-holding during the Lord's Prayer during this time.
These measures are to limit the possibility of spreading the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the seasonal flu, and colds. If everyone takes handwashing and the steps mentioned above seriously, combined with prayer, I hope it will make these temporary measures, and we can once again worship together as we are accustomed very soon. - Phil
Hoy, 11 de marzo de 2020, recibimos noticias del Obispo Walkowiak sobre cómo nosotros y otras parroquias en la Diócesis de Grand Rapids debemos ayudar a limitar la propagación del COVID-19 (Coronavirus) ahora que hay dos casos confirmados en Michigan. A continuación se detallan las pautas que nuestra parroquia seguirá. Estas medidas son, en este punto, por precaución para limitar la propagación del virus. Actualizaremos nuestra página web y otras fuentes de comunicación con más información según sea necesario.
Un resumen de los cambios temporales que tienen efecto inmediatamente:
- Su obligación de asistir a misa: es siempre aceptable no asistir si se siente enfermo.
- Comunión: no estaremos distribuyendo la Preciosa Sangre de Cristo (sin cáliz) en las Misas.

El obispo quiere que les recordemos a todos que su obligación de asistir a misa no se aplica si no se siente bien. Ya que la gripe estacional y el coronavirus están en juego en estos momentos, tome en serio los consejos para quedarse en casa si se encuentra enfermo. Si está en casa, lo alentamos a participar en una de nuestras Misas de fin de semana por transmisión en vivo (10:30 y 12:30) a través de un video en nuestro sitio web del canal YouTube o la página de Facebook en vivo. Echaremos de menos verle y adorar en el mismo espacio juntos, pero todos apreciarán su precaución.
Con vigencia inmediata, el obispo nos ha ordenado que no distribuyamos la Preciosa Sangre de Cristo durante la Misa (el cáliz). Recuerde que Cristo está completamente presente en ambas especies de la Eucaristía, cuerpo y sangre. Estamos trabajando para abordar las preocupaciones de aquellos entre nosotros con enfermedad celíaca que solo reciben de la copa. Si tiene enfermedad celíaca, consulte al coordinador de misas que estará en el pasillo cerca de los baños y en el reloj de pie para obtener instrucciones sobre cómo recibir hostias con bajo contenido de gluten. Si es un feligrés habitual o un visitante frecuente, envíe un correo electrónico a pkonczyk@stfrancisholland.org para que podamos mantenerlo informado sobre los cambios en cómo recibir hostias con bajo contenido de gluten a medida que avanzamos y descubrimos qué funciona mejor.

Además, por favor absténgase de tomarse de la mano durante la Oración del Señor durante este tiempo.
