In the heart of our community lies a parish that stands as a testament to the beautiful diversity that enriches our faith journey. St. Francis de Sales Parish is not just a congregation; it's a tapestry woven by the hands of generations of parishioners, staff members, and priests. This sacred space resonates with the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit, shaping us as a united, yet wonderfully diverse family in Christ.
I consider myself truly blessed – not only for being part of this vibrant community but also for having the opportunity to witness and serve its uniqueness. I recall speaking with Fr. Charlie Brown via phone when I was inquiring about a position at the parish, and he mentioned how he can go from one meeting in Spanish, the next meeting in English, and then another with a translator helping him communicate with someone who only speaks Vietnamese. I was in awe and excited to be part of a community like that. Over decades, the Holy Spirit has been our guide, working through the hands of devoted individuals to mold our parish into something truly extraordinary. We are, in essence, the pottery being shaped by the divine hands of God.
Our parish stands as a beacon of diversity, perhaps even the most diverse in our diocese. A unity of cultures, languages, and backgrounds has made us a truly remarkable congregation that has allowed us to do and continue to do amazing things that build up God’s kingdom. Our liturgies, enriched by the array of languages spoken, remind us of the universality of the Church. Bilingual (and even some trilingual) celebrations have been a cornerstone of our faith journey, symbolizing the unity that transcends linguistic barriers. We have a long history of supporting migrants with resources and people who are going through the immigration process connect with lawyers and resources. Even our St. Vincent de Paul and Saint Benedict Institute are also testaments to our parishes’ commitment to serving the diversity of our community and crossing barriers many parishioners have not been able to overcome.
Despite our differences in culture and language, we find strength in our unity as brothers and sisters in Christ. English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and a growing number of other language speakers gather together under the roof of one faith, honoring the Father through His only begotten Son. This unity showcases the power of faith to transcend cultural boundaries and fosters a deep sense of togetherness that's a testament to our community's dedication.
Our journey, however, hasn't been without challenges. With such diversity comes the responsibility to cater to individual needs – a task that can be as rewarding as it is demanding. It’s not easy for our English speakers to sing in Spanish, for instance in Mass, nor is it easy for our Spanish speakers to sing in English. It’s not easy for staff to plan programming and communication in multiple languages and tailoring it for the different cultures in our community. Our clergy are often pulled in different ways often feeling as though they are not doing enough.
Our community's richness also extends to the array of challenges faced by each culture and generation. One challenge that has deeply touched my heart during my near-decade here is supporting young adults from Spanish-speaking homes who primarily communicate in English outside their families. Walking with them as they reconcile their faith heritage with the reality that they often operate their daily lives in another culture and language has been both a challenge and a privilege.
Intertwined with this uniqueness is the resounding message from Scripture that we are one body of Christ. This truth is at the heart of St. Francis de Sales Parish. Our diversity reflects the multitude of parts in the body of Christ, each contributing to the health and vitality of the whole. We stand as a living testament that diversity is a gift from God, a means to showcase His boundless creativity.
St. Francis de Sales Parish stands as a living example of unity in diversity, a testament to the work of the Holy Spirit. With gratitude, we celebrate our diverse backgrounds and cultures, knowing that in our differences, we reflect the majesty of God's creation. As we continue to journey together, let us remember that, just as in the mystical body of Christ, each part plays a vital role. In this realization, we embrace our uniqueness, cherishing our role as brothers and sisters in Christ, united by His love and grace to grow passionate disciples of Jesus Christ.

Celebrando la Unidad en la Diversidad: El Tapiz Único de la Parroquia San Francisco de Sales
En el corazón de nuestra comunidad yace una parroquia que representa un testimonio de la hermosa diversidad que enriquece nuestro camino de fe. La Parroquia San Francisco de Sales no es solo una congregación, sino un tapiz tejido por las manos de generaciones de feligreses, miembros del personal y sacerdotes. Este espacio sagrado resuena con la presencia guía del Espíritu Santo, moldeándonos como una familia unida, pero maravillosamente diversa en Cristo.
Me considero verdaderamente bendecido, no solo por ser parte de esta vibrante comunidad, sino también por tener la oportunidad de ser testigo y servir su singularidad. Recuerdo haber hablado con el Padre Charlie Brown por teléfono cuando estaba indagando sobre un puesto en la parroquia, y mencionó cómo podía pasar de una reunión en español a la siguiente en inglés, y luego a otra con un traductor que le ayudaba a comunicarse con alguien que solo hablaba vietnamita. Quedé maravillado y emocionado de ser parte de una comunidad así. A lo largo de décadas, el Espíritu Santo ha sido nuestro guía, trabajando a través de manos devotas para moldear nuestra parroquia en algo verdaderamente extraordinario. Somos, en esencia, la cerámica siendo moldeada por las manos divinas de Dios.
Nuestra parroquia brilla como un faro de diversidad, quizás la más diversa de nuestra diócesis. Una unidad de culturas, idiomas y antecedentes nos ha convertido en una congregación verdaderamente notable que nos ha permitido hacer y seguir haciendo cosas sorprendentes que construyen el reino de Dios. Nuestras liturgias, enriquecidas por la variedad de idiomas hablados, nos recuerdan la universalidad de la Iglesia. Las celebraciones bilingües (y hasta trilingües) han sido piedra angular de nuestro camino de fe, simbolizando la unidad que trasciende las barreras lingüísticas. Tenemos una larga historia de apoyo a los migrantes con recursos y personas que están pasando por el proceso de inmigración, conectándolos con abogados y recursos. Incluso nuestro San Vicente de Paúl y el Instituto San Benito son testamentos del compromiso de nuestras parroquias de servir a la diversidad de nuestra comunidad y superar barreras que muchos feligreses no han podido superar.
A pesar de nuestras diferencias culturales e idiomáticas, encontramos fortaleza en nuestra unidad como hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Los hablantes de inglés, español, vietnamita y un creciente número de otros idiomas se reúnen bajo el techo de una sola fe, honrando al Padre a través de su único Hijo engendrado. Esta unidad muestra el poder de la fe para trascender las barreras culturales y fomenta un profundo sentido de unión que es un testimonio de la dedicación de nuestra comunidad.
Nuestro viaje, sin embargo, no ha estado exento de desafíos. Con tanta diversidad viene la responsabilidad de atender a las necesidades individuales, una tarea que puede ser tan gratificante como exigente. No es fácil para nuestros hablantes de inglés cantar en español, por ejemplo en la Misa, ni es fácil para nuestros hablantes de español cantar en inglés. No es fácil para el personal planificar la programación y la comunicación en varios idiomas y adaptarla a las diferentes culturas de nuestra comunidad. Nuestros clérigos a menudo son tirados en diferentes direcciones y a menudo sienten que no están haciendo lo suficiente.
La riqueza de nuestra comunidad también se extiende a la variedad de desafíos que enfrenta cada cultura y generación. Un desafío que ha tocado profundamente mi corazón durante mi casi década aquí es apoyar a los jóvenes adultos de hogares de habla hispana que se comunican principalmente en inglés fuera de sus familias. Caminar con ellos mientras reconcilian su herencia de fe con la realidad de que a menudo operan sus vidas diarias en otra cultura e idioma ha sido tanto un desafío como un privilegio.
Entrelazado con esta singularidad está el resonante mensaje de las Escrituras de que somos un cuerpo en Cristo. Esta verdad está en el corazón de la Parroquia San Francisco de Sales. Nuestra diversidad refleja la multitud de partes en el cuerpo de Cristo, cada una contribuyendo a la salud y vitalidad del conjunto. Somos un testimonio viviente de que la diversidad es un regalo de Dios, un medio para mostrar su creatividad sin límites.
La Parroquia San Francisco de Sales se erige como un ejemplo vivo de unidad en la diversidad, un testimonio de la obra del Espíritu Santo. Con gratitud, celebramos nuestros diversos orígenes y culturas, sabiendo que en nuestras diferencias, reflejamos la majestuosidad de la creación de Dios.
