We, the people of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, are a pilgrim people, a people on a journey. We struggle to live out the gospel in the context of our parish and our community while we travel together the path to the kingdom of God. We respect the beliefs and traditions of other Christian churches and we strive to cooperate with them in serving those in our community. We are to be a people of hospitality toward vacationers, college students and seasonal laborers, making special effort to help them feel welcome among us. We believe the various cultures within our community are gifts from God, and rather than assimilate them, we seek to be enriched by them. We accept one another and our different backgrounds while at the same time recognizing we are indeed a common Christian family. Whether cooperating with other Christian churches of the community of Holland, welcoming visitors and seasonal laborers, or accepting one another within our own parish community, we seek the unity that God wills, for we share "one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." (Ephesians 4:5-6)

Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl

Second Week of Lent – The Transfiguration
Jesus’ transfiguration was a moment of hope for the disciples, giving them the strength to endure the future
sacrifices they would make as they formed the early Church.  As we continue our journey with Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl, let us be mindful that our Lenten sacrifices help to give hope to our brothers and sisters in need.  Rice Bowls will be available in the gather space this weekend.  You may also stop at the office if you miss the opportunity to get them on the weekend.

Dear Parents,

Hard to believe that February is nearly over. We are one week into living differently during Lent. Our Middle School students are attempting to live a complaint free life. Each child has been asked to donate money to the Catholic Relief Services rice bowl project. Father Charlie Brown reminded everyone about almsgiving, prayer and fasting during mass this week. We were blest to have Dr. Michael Page, who just returned from Haiti, share his experiences with our students after mass. He asked that we mark the 12th of every month to remember Haiti as they struggle to rebuild their lives and to have access to the basic necessities.

Each child understands and internalizes Lent differently. Their response is partly personal and partly family/school/church culture. Being able to acknowledge the challenges of preparing for Easter on a daily basis is one of the blessings of a catholic education.

Next week we will begin celebrating March is Reading month. Pick a book and set aside some time each evening to read aloud to your children. Consider logging how many hours your family spends reading and compare it to how much time your family spends with technology. We have many great activities planned throughout the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone who has already returned their enrollment forms for 2010/2011. Consider asking for an extra form and sharing Corpus Christi with a friend.

Vocations

Talking with your children have you neglected to raise the call to Church ministry?  The process of answering God's call begins in childhood. Throughout adolescence and adulthood, the attitudes assumed in childhood begin to influence the course of one's life.   A vocation or a talent will not grow unless it is nurtured in childhood and adolescence by a parent.   Often children talk about what they want to be "when they grow up":  doctors, lawyers, athletes, nurses, movie stars teachers, carpenters.  They talk about these roles, but do they ever talk about being a priest, sister or brother?  You are the hand of God--encourage your children to consider Church ministry.

We need your help!!!

Every week Macintosh Manor’s seniors clip coupons for our men and women in service.  Thank you to all who have brought in coupons to be clipped.  Hopefully, more people will contribute.

The coupons are sent to PX’s all over the world.  Many letters of appreciation are received from the military bases. Our service people appreciate the help to save in such critical times.  Many thanks and pray for our troops.

Flood Relief Task Force

The news media carried information regarding Holland’s Flood Relief Task Force efforts to assist low-income families with needed furnaces, water heaters and general clean up.  In order to do this, we need to raise $200,000.  We are asking any of our parishioners who may wish to contribute financially to this effort to make your checks payable to St. Francis and in the memo indicate ‘Flood Relief’.   We will then forward one check on to United Way the clearinghouse for these donations.

OUR FAITH, OUR FUTURE - A Plan for the Diocese of Grand Rapids

Dear Parishioners:

The first steps of our diocesan planning process are well under way.  We are one of the first three deaneries that have been chosen to initiate this process.  Last week there was a meeting of our deanery (which roughly consists of Ottawa County) held at St. Mary’s, Marne.  The Meitler Consultants presented to representatives of our parishes and schools the preliminary results of the initial meetings of pastors, principals and parish leaders.  They also have collected some data about the area parishes and schools.  We had the opportunity to discuss some trends and their implications for our parish life.

Attention Seniors

Do you contribute to St. Francis de Sales Church but fail to receive a tax benefit because you do not itemize deductions?

TELL CONGRESS: "Remove Abortion Funding & Mandates from Needed Health Care Reform!"

TELL CONGRESS: "Remove Abortion Funding & Mandates from Needed Health Care Reform!" - Health Care Reform is about saving lives not destroying them

Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation. The Catholic bishops of the United States strongly support genuine health care reform that protects the life and dignity of all, from the moment of conception until natural death. However, all current bills are seriously deficient on abortion and conscience rights, and do not yet provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor.

The Flu & Mass - What Should We Do?

Whenever two or more people gather, some sharing of germs is inevitable. However, when we gather in Jesus’ name for Mass, our first concern is the sharing of our gratitude, our trust, our belief in Christ who is with us.

The Fall Flu Season is underway. The virus that is getting the most attention this year is the H1N1 (“swine flu”), for nearly all of
us may be at risk for catching it.

Each of us has the responsibility of taking precautions to prevent the spread of this disease. We need to wash our hands
frequently, be careful when we cough and sneeze, scrutinize our habits, our practices and our procedures where the spread of
infection seems most possible.
