School is a little too quiet today. We have bid goodbye to our 8th grade class. Everything that was special about each one of them leaves behind a void. All year they have been pushing against leaving – claiming that they are done and ready to move on to high school. Truth is they will be dearly missed and thought of often as they transition to their new schools. Our eight graders will be heading off in different directions – Catholic Central, West Catholic, Holland, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, Zeeland West, and Holland Christian. We will look for them to stop by on occasion with full bragging rights.

Next week the rest of our students will participate in Field Day and final activities. They are eagerly anticipating whatever summer brings. It is the different rhythm of following the sun instead of a clock on a wall that opens everything up. Regular outings to the beach or nightly ice cream runs after dinner are all the routine that is required. I hope you enjoy the unexpected this summer.

Thank you for a wonderful first year.

Migrant Mentoring

This is a program of building cultural bridges of  support and understanding.  Many members of  St. Francis have participated in this program.  It is an opportunity for adults from our community to be paired with children from the migrant farm workers.  A  background  check will be conducted on everyone who wishes to be a mentor.  The Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance who sponsor this program will also be  a support system for all who participate.  Information is available in the kiosk in the gathering space or call (616)846-9074.

Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl

Sixth Week of Lent – Palm Sunday – The Passion
This week we walk with Jesus through his passion, death, and resurrection.  We begin to experience the sacrifice he made for us and how we are also called to give our life for others.  Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl has helped us walk with our sisters and brothers who daily take up the cross of poverty.  Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we unite ourselves in the one human family that is God’s creation.

Vocations

Talking with your children have you neglected to raise the call to Church ministry?  The process of answering God's call begins in childhood. Throughout adolescence and adulthood, the attitudes assumed in childhood begin to influence the course of one's life.   A vocation or a talent will not grow unless it is nurtured in childhood and adolescence by a parent.   Often children talk about what they want to be "when they grow up":  doctors, lawyers, athletes, nurses, movie stars teachers, carpenters.  They talk about these roles, but do they ever talk about being a priest, sister or brother?  You are the hand of God--encourage your children to consider Church ministry.

How to Recognize God’s Presence and Voice
by  Michael Fonseca

In response to Jesus’ prayer, the Father has granted us the gift of the Holy Spirit who is described by Jesus as our Advocate before the Father.  Jesus goes even further when He says that the Holy Spirit will dwell within us.  Thus the Holy Spirit is the creator and keeper of our souls/spirits.  Discernment is essentially life in and with the Holy Spirit.  We will examine our life in the Spirit and how it unfolds in every day life and circumstances.
