Pope Francis has challenged parishes to take in refugees. He has said, “I would like to ask you all to see a ray of hope as well in the eyes and hearts of refugees and of those who have been forcibly displaced. A hope that is expressed in expectations for the future, in the desire for friendship, in the wish to participate in the host society also through learning the language, access to employment and the education of children. I admire the courage of those who hope to be able gradually to resume a normal life, waiting for joy and love to return to brighten their existence. We can and must all nourish this hope!”

Inspired by the words of our Pope, Our Lady of the Lake and St. Francis de Sales parishes have both decided to cosponsor a refugee family with Bethany Christian Services as our partner in this venture. This means that with two parishes there will be two more refugee families in settling in Holland in 2016. The Outreach/Social Justice Board and both parish pastoral councils spent a good amount of time studying and praying about this possibility. In the near future there will be an informational meeting at each parish for all parishioners. This will be an opportunity to dialogue together after a presentation on what cosponsorship means and how it’s integral to living our faith as disciples. Part of the dialogue will be time to answer any questions you may have.

Both parishes have a history of sponsoring refugees. With Pope Francis’ call to Catholics to be of service to the most vulnerable, it’s exciting that we can resurrect this ministry now. Many volunteers will be needed as English tutors, as drivers to appointments, and as friends. A liaison with the schools and a financial counselor could also be of service. Donations (dishes, towels, beds, etc) to set up a house or apartment will be another way to walk alongside Jesus. At the informational session and after Masses at some future date there will be an opportunity for signups for volunteers and donations of needed household items.

Feel free to contact Sister Noella or members of this Board. They are Dan Fitzpatrick, Kathy Schoolmeester, and Jim Wemple from Our Lady of the Lake and Pat Eldean, Donna Nowak, and Tom Bouman from St. Francis de Sales.
